Heaven and hell

My first game audio experience made in unity3D and FMOD, focusing on storytelling through aesthetic and sound design.

Story and player design

Heaven And Hell is a story about a man that gets flown out by eldritch beings to a horrifying place. Injected with poison, he has to get to the church before time runs out.

If he strays too much from the set path, the poison grows stronger and at the end, he will succumb to it, becoming one of the beings he feared so much.

After the player has heard the introduction, they spawn at the start zone where they can familiarise themselves with the environment. The music/ambience is mellow and unnerving, in order to create a tense atmosphere, accompanying the player taking a journey into the unknown.

Sound design

I used a lot of distorted animal sounds to paint the feeling of supernatural. At 4:10, when the player dies to the poison,  I made the death scene brutal, aiming to invoke a mental image to what is happening to the character, as this can sometimes be scarier than actually seeing it.

Another note worthy account is at 1:25. Going closer to the house, I made a women fight off hounds inside of the house and the closer you get, the more horror you can hear. At 1:55, the player can start to hear the finish line (salvation), that rises in volume the closer the player gets to it. At the end, I drowned out all other noise, as the sound of church bells are calling the player home.
