Ape's Journey

Group project where I was in control of the composition, music system (Wwise) and up-mixing to 9.1.4. with pro tools

Storyline

Ape’s journey is a short game about a wizard going on a quest to get rid of the dragons plaguing the lands.

music

My task was to make music for the entire game, and to make it 3d. I chose a Ochrestra ensemble at the music made mainly with BBC Spitfire, samples from other ensemble’s and small amount of synthesis. The reason for this decision was mainly based on the setting and the story, Ape being a wizard and the fantastsical forest with its creatures. The music had to both emphasise the character, action and the surroundings.

The music is originally made linear in Ableton, but with thoughts on how to make it non-linear. For example, making a piece where there are already thought in stingers, quieter parts and explosive loops that can seamlessly transition from one another. A big part of the process was also about considering how it would sound in-game and how to upmix it. It had to be 3D, but it shouldn’t take the player out of the experience, which could happen if i had put the drums at the back. Therefore, I made a big stereo track that couldn’t fit everything, then when I mixed it up, I had plenty to work with.

Wwise

The base system is a switch/state containers in wwise that first chooses which state ape is in, Is he fighting? is he exploring? is he idling?. With those systems in check, and with variations of music i made stingers for everything, so it would always sound good if the player for example went from exploring quickly into fighting. We did this with trigger zones (if he is in swamp area, is he in danger, is he near a dragon) that would change.

The general sound design also has a lot of spatial audio therefore we chose to make the renders in pro-tools, to not take away from the ambience/sfx. The game is also tuned with the music, so there would never be harmonies or tones clashing with each other.

9.1.4 and 7.1.4 renders

WordPress and YouTube don’t support 9.1.4 – 7.1.4 renders for uploads. However, if you’re curious to experience the full music in surround sound, you can download the songs and listen here.  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wmrA3Zj1gKK2beUaBm7ahb6CLZa3lN38/view?usp=sharing

Otherwise here are some stereo demo’s.
